Remember when doing the limbo meant mimicking the kids on the Barney show who sang a song about counting backwards from five?
“We love to do the number limbo!”
Well of course they did. For one thing, they were probably no more than two feet tall, and they’re biggest worry was whether brother Tommy ate the last pudding Snack Pack (Dibs!).
If you don’t know what song I’m talking about, then click on this for a refresher. Okay, so it’s in Spanish, and the kids doing the limbo are made of Legos that look a lot like Star Wars characters. But the tune is the same! And so are the words…if you know Spanish.
Anyway, the point is doing the limbo has gotten a lot harder. It’s no longer a literal pole you’re bending backwards for, but people and schools and choices involving the expectations of those people in those schools. (It’s a mouthful, I know.)
Columbia College would like it very much if I stayed and tried out the new Media Arts program they’re trying to launch. I’d even get to make my own movie before I graduate… if I stay.
But the University of South Carolina has had a Media Arts program for quite some time now, and though it’s in the throes of revision and reconstruction and what have you, it still has quite a bit to offer.
I guess I just have to keep weighing out the pros and cons until I make a decision.
-Sigh-
I hate doing the college limbo.
I hate doing the college limbo.
As I go under, I have to wonder
Which school would be the best for me?
Which school would be the best for me?
What kind of results have come from the USC program, and where are they trying to take it from there? I’m sure the CC program would have bugs in it so there is always that to think about. Because of the low numbers on the CC campus as opposed to USC you would carry the title of “Best Senior Filmmaker” or something of that sort. You’ll figure out what’s best, because either way, the school you go to will have a good program. I have a CC bias, so don’t pay attention to me
I’ve seen some of the stuff that USC students have done, and I really envy them. I feel like I almost won’t be good enough, but I think it’s just that they’ve had more experiences with it at USC. Also, I don’t want a good title just handed to me the way things are generally handed to me here at CC. I liked it for a little while; now I wanna step up and challenge myself a little more. However, there are some things that have me considering CC over USC…. I think you’re right: I’ll figure it out eventually. Thanks!
I like the comparison of limbo with people’s expectations. It looks like a hard choice: be a part of something brand new at cc, maybe even become a head person; or learn from the experience at USC, making your way up the ladder. Whatever you decide, let the choice be yours and yours alone!
Thanks, Abe! That’s the plan!
I think that no matter where you go, there are going to be pros and cons with the program that you’re in. Honestly, if you are really serious about filming you need to place yourself in an environment where you are going to be challenged. You would be challenged at CC in different ways than USC, so it is something to think about. At CC, it’s a new program feeling its’ way into a school that places heavy emphasis on traditions (good and bad). At USC, the challenges would include the people and the typical “university” environment. I’ve noticed it when I’ve gone to Adam’s classes. Either way, what you want and how to get there is going to be a journey. I haven’t really liked CC until the end of last semester/this semester, because I am FINALLY out of Gen Ed and taking classes that actually interest me in a program that I am passionate about. It’s been a personal battle, but I feel like I am where I need to be, and I reached it without giving in. That’s what you need to do, and I know you can, whether it’s here or there.
Though of course I’d prefer you go here:). Or go to the Art Institute of Charlotte, or University of the Arts in Philadelphia (talk about emphasis on the arts!)
You just have to keep things in perspective, and do what’s best.
Thanks Aimee! I’ll keep all that in mind!
